It can be daunting to choose a large coffee maker for the first time. The selection of the brewing method, the size, the ease of use and not to forget the price have to be considered. If you follow the steps outlined below, you will have a good base for this decision.

1. For what purpose do you need a 12 cup coffee maker?

Do you need it only occasionally or do you plan it to use everyday for several hours at the time? If you plan to use your own coffee maker only occasionally, for example for the Sunday Coffee after church or during occasional events at the community hall, the large coffee makers listed under “Home Coffee Makers” will be ideal for you. If you plan to use it daily, but not for hours on end, for example for your bed and breakfast / guesthouse or for larger meetings, look at the section “Business Coffee Makers” and for large, 12 cup coffee makers that are meant to work for several hours in a row like in a coffee bar or as the main coffee machine for a larger office, look under “Industrial Coffee Makers”.

2. Your budget and the price

Cheap can be expensive, a large coffee maker is an investment in your business or family. You should always consider to buy the best one you can afford for the purpose you need it for. That doesn’t mean, you have to buy always the most expensive one! It would be for example overkill, if you would buy a heavy duty industrial coffee maker for the 3 or 4 times you have a family gathering at your house. A good “home coffee maker” will be sufficient for this kind of use. On the other hand, if you use a coffee maker that was designed for light use in a home environment, hours without end in a commercial coffee bar, you will break it sooner or later.

3. Space and ease of use

After you have determined the purpose and the budget for your new coffee maker, it is time to digg deeper and read some of the reviews here on the site. Each review is linked to the relevant coffee maker on Amazon, and there are more even more reviews available, so that you can make a truly informed decision about what to buy with your money. When looking at those reviews, keep the following points in mind: Ease of use and cleaning and the space you have available for the coffeemaker versus the space it needs. Avoid at all costs to cramp cables etc in too narrow spaces as it can damage them. Make sure you follow the instructions of the manufacturer to the point, when installing your new coffee maker in his new home.

Always remember to RTFM >>> Read The Friendly Manual!

Drip Coffee Makers

A drip Coffee Maker works by dripping, hence the name , hot (between 195F (90C) and 205F (97C)) Water from the reservoir through a filter that holds the grounded coffee and then the finished brew into a glass or thermos carafe. It takes approximately 4-8 minutes to make 6-12 cups of coffee.

1972 was the year when the first automatic drip and brew coffee maker was introduced to the home use market by the coffee maker producer Mr.Coffee. Nowadays drip coffee makers are the most bought home coffee makers and vastly popular for making small to large (up to 12 cups) quantities of coffee at home.

Coffee Urns

A coffee urn works with the percolator system and has a brewing speed of one cup per minute. It is the workhorse under the large, 12+ cup coffee makers. It is ideal for heavy duty and larger catering needs.

The bottom part of the percolator is filled with water and a basket, containing the grounded coffee, is placed aloft in the pot, sustained by a hollow tube. The water is heated, until it nearly boils. The water climbs, as it heats up, through the tube, and then rains over the grounded coffee in the basket, helped by gravity. The coffee leaves the basket with the coffee through little holes, rejoining the main water reservoir and starting its journey again. If this circle is repeated too often, the resulting coffee can become too strong and bitter. Done right, it produces a rich coffee with a lot of flavor, and best of all, fills the room with delicious coffee aroma!

Coffee Percolator

A coffee maker percolator style works similar to a coffee urn. It produces around 12 cups of coffee, or more, in a minimum time. Compared with a urn, it often brews the coffee directly into a carafe style container. The lower part of the percolator is filled with water and a basket, filled with coffee is placed above, connected via a hollow tube. When the water starts to boil, it starts to climb through the tube and to drip over the coffee in the basket. The coffee re-joins the water in the lower reservoir and starts the circle again.
